Associate Rector Search

St. Stephen’s has begun a search for an Associate Rector. Below is the timeline for the search, which includes an anticipated start date in July.

Associate Rector Search

St. Stephen’s is a transformational and adaptable parish of over 330 communicants, a Montessori school of 158 students, and a dedicated staff of 45. The church’s budget is $1.1M and the school’s budget is over $3.5M. Located in Houston, the fourth largest and most diverse, multicultural city in the U.S., St. Stephen’s offers a dynamic, forward-looking opportunity for those walking their unique path with Jesus. We are located between the vibrant Montrose and Museum District neighborhoods of Houston, Texas, walking distance to the Rothko Chapel, Menil Collection, and Houston Center for Photography.

For more than 50 years, St. Stephen’s Church and School have played a leading role in the fight for equality and social justice in Houston. The School was the first private institution in the city to admit students regardless of race, and in the early 1980s, the Church was one of the first communities in Houston to welcome and support people affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. St. Stephen’s was the first parish in the Diocese of Texas with a female rector, and it was the first Episcopal church in Houston to bless same-sex couples.

With this history as a guide, St. Stephen’s Vestry adopted an ambitious strategic ministry plan focused on: (1) growth: both evangelization and formation, (2) closing demographic gaps, (3) organizational development; and (4) nurturing the already close relationship of our church and school. The work to achieve these goals has been underway for the past two years, despite the COVID-19 pandemic. The Associate Rector will have the opportunity to manage the continued implementation of this plan, oversee the staff’s work to support it, and create formation and advocacy opportunities to nurture our laity for ministry. In addition, the Associate Rector will participate fully in the liturgical and pastoral life of the parish—preaching, celebrating liturgies, and pastoral care.
